Living with Meningitis

Even with prompt diagnosis and treatment, between 10 and 30% of people will sustain permanent damage and disability.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT?

After receiving expert care in hospital, you can understandably feel anxious about returning home. We aim to provide you with general information about what what to expect when leaving hospital or recovering at home.

Every person is different and the short-term and long-term effects of meningitis and septicaemia will vary from person to person. Your health care professionals are best-placed to provide you with specific information according to your situation.

To answer some of your questions about what to expect in the weeks, months and years following your discharge from hospital, we have compiled a range of downloadable fact sheets that cover the most common health concerns and reported after-effects of meningitis, including:

  • hearing loss,

  • brain damage,

  • learning difficulties,

  • seizures,

  • difficulties with physical activities,

  • scarring, and

  • loss of limbs.

You may wish to use the fact sheets as part of your conversations with your GP and supporting team of healthcare professionals.
